Description:
The Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory at UC Davis is a leading equine anti doping laboratory focused on ensuring the integrity of the horse-racing industry by controlling the use and potential abuse of prohibited substances. This position will report to the section supervisor and be responsible under general direction for the performance of organic analysis to determine xenobiotic residues in biological specimens. Also responsible for developing and performing method development strategies to enhance the drug testing capability of the lab utilizing new technology as available and participate in the update and development of analytical procedures, quality control procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Qualifications/Experience:
-Advanced degree or equivalent background and experience in analytical chemistry, especially organic residue analysis using HPLC, MS, and GC instrumentation.
-Skills to perform techniques and procedures for analysis of biological specimens.
-Knowledge and skills to perform mathematical calculations and statistical analysis.
-Knowledge of analytical chemistry and skills to critically read, interpret, evaluate and apply analytical procedures described in the literature.
-Knowledge of developing novel approaches or modifying described/published analytical procedures to expand testing capabilities of the EACL laboratory.
-Knowledge of sample preparation techniques such as solid phase, protein precipitation, and liquid-liquid sample extraction, sample spiking and matrix matching.
-Advanced skills operating a wide range of manual and computer-controlled analytical equipment including Gas Chromatograph, Liquid Chromatograph and Mass Spectrometers.
-Skills to maintain and trouble-shoot equipment and obtain maximum performance from instruments.
-Skills to prepare analytical reagents, solutions, controls and standards.
-Computer skills and associated software such as Excel, Word, LIMS to quickly/accurately enter test results into the computerized databases.
-Knowledge of QA/QC to continuously produce high quality data.
