Description:
The Kenneth L. Maddy Laboratory is a leading equine anti-doping laboratory focused on ensuring the integrity of the
horseracing industry by controlling the use and potential abuse of prohibited substances.
This position will report to the Laboratory Manager and be responsible for the management and supervision of the
Liquid Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) and Confirmation sections. Responsible for directing regulatory
testing of small and large molecules using advanced analytical approaches for client samples with guidance from the
laboratory director. Also responsible for directing method development strategies to enhance the drug testing
capability of the lab utilizing new technology as available and participate in the update and development of analytical
procedures, quality control procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Qualifications/Experience:
-Bachelor's degree in Pharmacology, Biology, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry or a closely related field, or equivalent experience/training.
- Advanced knowledge of analytical chemistry and experience to critically interpret and perform techniques and procedures for analysis of biological samples as described in the Standard Operating Procedures.
-Advanced skills and experience using sample preparation techniques such as solid phase and liquid-liquid extraction, sample spiking, and matrix matching.
-Advanced skills to operate and experience using a wide range of manual and computer-controlled analytical equipment including Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry and Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry. Experience operating other analytical instrumentation.
-Eexperience maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment to obtain maximum performance from analytical instruments.
-Strong supervisory skills to recruit, hire, train, evaluate the performance of employees, encourage staff development, and perform conflict resolution for staff supervised.
-Advanced knowledge and experience to teach, technically train and provide analytical chemistry-related consultation to technical and professional personnel.
-Organizational skills to schedule work activities.
-Customer service skills, with the experience to interact harmoniously with individuals at all levels of the University and with external clients. Skills to obtain, comprehend, and give adequate consideration to others' priorities, opinions and concerns. Skills to communicate complex and sensitive information, negotiate and resolve conflicts and promote teamwork.
-Experience working in a high throughput diagnostic lab setting.
-Experience troubleshooting analytical assay issues and instrumentation.
-Working knowledge of computer systems, software applications (databases, spreadsheets, email, word processing) and Laboratory Information Management Systems.
-Skills to prepare analytical reagents, solutions, controls and standards.
-Knowledge of statistical analysis to perform mathematical calculations.
- Skills to independently make decisions, problem-solve to make sound recommendations.
-Knowledge of QA/QC to continuously produce high quality data.
-Skills to handle/dispose of hazardous materials.
-Familiarity with literature sources of analytical procedures.
